Rupert Grint’s Thrilling Return to the Harry Potter Universe; Ron Weasley Actor Takes to the Broadway Stage
According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Rupert Grint, who portrayed Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter feature films, is following in the footsteps of Tom Felton (who played Draco Malfoy) this winter by returning to reprise his role in Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Like Felton, Grint will be playing an adult version of the character that launched him to stardom in his youth. However, the two stars will not share the Broadway stage simultaneously; Grint’s run as Ron Weasley is scheduled for a 17-week engagement starting Tuesday, February 2, 2027, and running through Sunday, May 30, 2027. Meanwhile, Felton, who currently stars in the show, is expected to depart the production on Sunday, January 3, 2027.
Felton’s entry into the cast at the Lyric Theatre in November of last year had an immediate and dramatic impact on the box office, driving ticket sales and audience attendance to unprecedented levels.
In a statement regarding the experience, Grint wrote: “Ron Weasley has been an integral part of my life since I was 11 years old, and I am absolutely eager to reconnect with him at this stage of life. Returning to Ron’s shoes now that we are both fathers feels incredibly full-circle—a perspective that feels strangely familiar yet entirely new. Beyond that, stepping back onto Broadway in a role that shaped so much of my life is immensely exciting.”
He added: “The first time I saw Cursed Child on stage, I was completely blown away, and I cannot wait to step back onto Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where we left off. I am thrilled to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter.”
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said in a joint statement: “Rupert Grint’s portrayal of Ron Weasley across eight Harry Potter films defined what true, brave, and steadfast friendship looks like for generations, even in the face of adversity. Alongside Wizarding World fans across the globe, we watched Rupert grow up into the role of Ron—a performance that anchored the character’s humor, courage, and that irrepressible mischievous spark like a golden thread across the years.”
They emphasized: “Rupert joining our phenomenal company at the Lyric Theatre in New York City is not just a reprise of a past role. He is picking up a journey he began in childhood, bringing with him every bit of the personal and artistic growth he has gained in the years since—spanning film, television, and acclaimed stage turns on Broadway and in the West End. His return creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the tale of family, legacy, and time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child tells. We are not only welcoming a top-tier actor to our Broadway theatre, but also celebrating the homecoming of the artist who made Ron Weasley so deeply beloved.”
Grint made his Broadway debut in 2014 in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play, starring alongside Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. In the UK, he made his West End debut starring in Jez Butterworth’s acclaimed revival of Mojo alongside Ben Whishaw.
Grint recently starred in Nightborn, directed by Hanna Bergholm, which premiered at the 2026 Berlin International Film Festival and was released by IFC Films. His upcoming project is Paramount Pictures’ feature film Ebenezer, scheduled for a theatrical release on November 13.
His other credits include M. Night Shyamalan’s series Servant, which ran for four seasons on Apple TV+, as well as Shyamalan’s feature Knock at the Cabin. Additionally, he appeared in Guillermo del Toro’s Netflix anthology series Cabinet of Curiosities, among several other projects.
